In Defense of Angela Keaton, Part 5

General news

In a prior post, I reminded readers that the Libertarian National Committee had voted to ask Angela Keaton to resign. They then considered a motion to expel Keaton from the LNC. It is inescapable that Keaton will soon need a coherent defense against the forthcoming motion of expulsion. In this and following messages, I offer such a defense.

In the prior post, I proposed that Keaton's acts were far less serious than the acts of Bob Barr, who while on the LNC had through his PAC supported Republican Federal candidates. However, the LNC did not subject Barr to any penalty. I now note a few actions of the Libertarian National Committee, as a whole, that are worse than the actions of which Angela was accused.

#1) Use of National Party resources to support Bob Barr's nominating campaign.

It has long been the policy of the LNC that National Party resources are not to be used to support particular candidates for our Party's Presidential nomination.  Only even support of all candidates was allowed. Step to April 2008.  The National Party newsletter for that month gave front page with picture coverage  to two Presidential campaigns, other campaigns being ignored.

Party Bylaws of course specify that the content of LP News articles is the responsibility of the National Chair, William Redpath, who is therefore seen to have committed acts far more serious than Keaton's.  Was this an accident?  Eyewitnesses seem to recall that at the convention banquet post-nomination Redpath boasted of having been the man who recruited Barr as a candidate.

#2)  The Libertarian Party is constituted to be a party separate and distinct from all other parties.  In furtherance of this goal, the National Party has received vast numbers of donations from the Libertarian faithful.  In Fall 2007, the LNC voted to use these resources, some of them, to support Republican Presidential candidate Paul.  Diverting Libertarian Party resources to support a Republican was a gross breach of fiduciary responsibility by the National Committee.  To receive those funds, given to support our Party, and attempt to use them to support a Republican was a violation of our Statement of principles, which condemn theft and fraud.  [Please specifically exclude from this complaint Stuart Flood, who advised the LNC that their plans were sure to fail for technical reasons.

#3) The phony "District of Columbia" delegation to the Denver convention.  You may choose how to sort here the guilty from the innocent.  Our Party Bylaws require that the recognized affiliate must appoint the delegation to the National Convention.  However, the DC affiliate is noted for its total silence.  As the convention approached, MPP chair Rob Kampia claimed to be the 'delegation chair' and demanded recognition of his delegation.  What was going on here? We now know.  Kampia was scheduled to be Bob Barr's nominator, but in order to do that he had to become a delegate. The full historical record on how this was done is in Liberty for America, the first issue

The Anomalous D.C. Delegation (historical record).......6

but the identities of the key responsible parties are revealed by the memo I was forwarded, which clearly indicates the parties responsible for this historical gem

    Emily,
What's the latest that delegate names can be submitted to you?
Also, Rob Kampia in D.C. has stepped up to the plate to be delegation chair.  I spoke with Bob Sullentrup about this.  Since there is no D.C. party, he said someone can step up to be the delegation chair (not party chair) to fill in vacancies.
Rob will be submitting names to you after a D.C. Meetup.
    Thanks for everything!
    Best,
    Shane
