I was just told about this site, by a friend, and told it was the libertarian answer to The Daily KOS. Well, despite the fact that the best answer to THAT waste of electrons is a loud razzberry, this might be a good idea to tie lovers of liberty together.
The idea of a libertarian blog is a good one, and a lot of folks are already doing it, even if they aren't calling it that - but online magazines and many other sites perform a similar function, of bringing libertarians together, sharing news AND ideas, and providing a place to send fellow-travelers and the curious.
So, do we need another one? I'm not sure, but am willing to try one. What we DON'T need for the freedom movement is a clone of either FreeRepublic.com or The Daily KOS. Homage is one thing (if IMHO misplaced), but imitation of that piece of garbage is NOT good. (Remember your mother: "Would you go jump off a cliff just because 'everyone else is doing it?'") Childish playground or lockerroom insults and language, needless name-calling, madness-inspired conspiracy theories, and such like are not needed, and are positively detrimental. Ad hominim attacks are more than a waste of electrons and keystrokes, they drive away people who could otherwise be won to the cause. Name calling is not always bad: call a spade a spade, and if some evil thing is done by a person, don't be afraid to name names. But gratuitous insults about a person's appearance, speaking habits, relatives, or supposed private practices do no good for anyone. Nor do "cute" demeaning nicknames. At the same time, some emotion is good and needed; too many of us are far too Spock-ish and refuse to at least temper rationality with human emotions like fear, love, and yes, even patriotism and hate. Frankly, I am concerned, based on my first view of the home page, that this is nothing but a house organ for the Phillies campaign. I have nothing for or against him, but one campaign and presidential politics should not dominate a forum intended to bring libertarians together to work for liberty. There is a tremendous difference between Phillies' sponsoring a site and being a house organ. Based on the introductory note, this seems to be recognized, but that doesn't mean the possibility of it becoming one should be ignored. Even if only reprints of other websites are posted at first, this forum should give a fair view of the libertarian community. I hope that it will.
