Dean Baker at TPM Cafe: There's a danger that fund managers may end up being taxed the same as the rest of us, instead of subsidized through tax policy. Fortunately Grover Norquist is toiling long and hard to make sure this injustice doesn't happen.
Many people no doubt share Norquist's sympathy for the plight of fund managers. The cost of living is soaring for fund managers. A proper vacation home can easily run into the tens of millions of dollars, as does a decent sized home in the Hamptons. The price of yachts and private jets keeps getting higher as do luxury boxes at major sporting events. And an elite private nursery school - a necessity for getting children on the right track in life - can run $40,000 a year. That's almost two hours of work for many fund managers. Now, just to be clear, as a Libertarian I want to see schoolteachers and firefighters be as free from taxation as fund managers are presently, not the other way around. But given that at present we have a certain level of government spending that won't decrease overnight, it certainly seems like the existing tax burden might be shared more with fund managers.
